Hacking Endorphins through Exercise
Written by Vivian Liu
Our bodies crave movement. One of my favorite benefits of exercise is that it acts as a natural painkiller. Research has shown that exercise releases a hormone known as endorphins, the body’s natural pain reliever and mood booster. If you’ve ever felt an “endorphin rush” after an enjoyable workout, a massage, or eating really good food, that’s endorphins at work! When I’m struggling with my mental health, I have found that exercise has been one of the healthiest coping mechanisms when it comes to feeling better. On top of exercise being neurologically beneficial, it is also a good psychological strategy to take your mind off things. Being stressed out with work eases away when I’m trying to focus on catching my breath on the treadmill! Not only that, but once you start to see exercise as taking control of your own health by letting yourself dedicate time in your day to improve your physical and psychological well-being, it becomes a weekly habit that seems too good to be true.
Here are some tips to get moving:
Find ways to move that you find enjoyable!
You don’t need to hit the gym every day if that’s not your style. Try hiking on weekends, rock climbing, or even skateboarding!
A little exercise goes a long way!
A couple of push ups when I’m stressed out helps to reset my mood and clear my head. All it takes is a minute. If you can’t do a push up, jog in place or try jumping jacks between work breaks.
Taking that first step is the hardest part.
Trust me, I haven’t always been someone who enjoys exercise. There was a period of time where I didn’t go to the gym at all. I had to force myself to go the first couple of times but once I got the ball rolling, it became a habit that was hard to break!
Get gym buddies!
What better way to spend time with your friends than getting healthy together! They help motivate and keep you on track, too!
Exercising is hard. but it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. The many benefits of exercise are worth considering when trying to motivate yourself. I hope these tips help you to hack your endorphins!
